The ‘Modern Family’ actress, 51, was married to 46-year-old Joe at a lavish, star-studded ceremony in Palm Beach in front of 400 guests in November 2015, but the couple said they were making the ‘difficult’ decision to separate.
An insider told Page Six about Sofia’s life after the split: “Sofia is living her best life. She spends time with her friends after being stifled in a relationship with a largely unsupportive partner.
“Sofía was always there to take care of Joe, although his career was never what it was when they met. I think her success and zest for life threatened him.”
Sofia and Joe said in a statement about their split: “We have made the difficult decision to divorce. As two people who love and care for each other deeply, we politely ask for respect for our privacy at this new stage in our lives.”
Sofia, who has a 31-year-old son named Manolo with her first husband Joe Gonzalez, is currently celebrating her 51st birthday in Italy with friends without Joe or her wedding ring, according to Page Six.
A source told the outlet, “Sofía and Joe have been living apart for some time and are taking some distance to think about their future.”
The pair were last seen together in Hoboken, New Jersey last month when Sofia visited actor Joe on the set of his new project Nonnas.
Since then, Sofia has posted a series of sexy selfies online while living out her extended birthday party.
One of her captions read, “When life gives you lemons, you come to Italy to squeeze them.”
Another source told Page Six: “At the start of Sofia’s big birthday trip, those close to her explained Joe’s absence with the excuse that he was busy filming on the east coast; That excuse barely held up because of the writers’ strike, but when the actors’ strike came into effect he could have been on the first flight… and that’s clearly not the case.
“Now nobody out there is trying to pretend it’s not over yet. it’s over It is finished.”
Celebrity guests at the couple’s wedding included Sofia’s Modern Family co-stars Ariel Winter, Ed O’Neill, Eric Stonestreet, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Julie Bowen, Sarah Hyland and Ty Burrell, and Joe’s True Blood co-stars Anna Paquin and Stephen Moyer.
Reese Witherspoon and Channing Tatum were also in attendance.
The couple met through the actress’ former co-star Jesse Tyler at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in 2014 when she was engaged to businessman Nick Loeb.
Manganiello asked for the actress’ number a few weeks later when she broke up with Loeb.
In 2020, he told People magazine, “I knew pretty quickly that I could trust her, and she knew pretty quickly that she could trust me.”
“And we’re both the kind of people who are able to put the other person above themselves.
“I was able to put her desires ahead of mine, whatever they were, and she was able to do the same.
“Once you have it, you never let it go.”
