For weeks there has been discussion about how high the sum for the basic child security agreed in the coalition agreement should be from 2025. SPD parliamentary group leader Rix has precise ideas.

Berlin. From the point of view of SPD deputy parliamentary group leader Sönke Rix, the planned basic child security must be paid out dependent on income and based on the “real needs” of the children. “The next step is for the family minister to present a concrete concept of what basic child security should look like that meets these requirements,” Rix told the editorial network Germany (RND).

“The basic child security has been agreed between the coalition partners – and it will come,” said Rix. The increase in child benefit that has already taken place is not enough on its own, since not all families benefit from it. “When receiving citizen benefit, the child benefit is offset as income, for example,” he explained.

For weeks, the Greens and FDP have been arguing about how much money the traffic light government should spend on the basic child security agreed in the coalition agreement from 2025. It is planned that various state benefits for children will be bundled and that more entitled persons will benefit from digital and simplified application submission.

Family Minister Lisa Paus (Greens) has announced a need of twelve billion euros. Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP), on the other hand, sees little room for maneuver in the budget and refers to the child benefit increase that has already taken place.
