The best new fake tans to make you glow this summer

Sales of artificial tans are up year-on-year and are set to hit £1billion worldwide by 2026. New formulas make stained palms and that telltale cookie smell a thing of the past. “All it takes is a little prep,” says tanning expert and Isle of Paradise founder Jules Von Hep. “With a little know-how, it’s easy to get the right shine every time,” he says.

WHICH FORMULA IS RIGHT FOR YOU?

drops “If you’re new to tanning, drops are the easiest to use,” says Jules. “Think of them like syrup — they need to be mixed with a moisturizer, and the more drops you add, the deeper your tan will be.”

mist/water “This is another great option for beginner tanners,” says Jules. “Simply spray onto skin and rub into hands, similar to spritzing on SPF at the beach.”

To express Jules says: “You’ll find that fast-acting mousses are perfect when you need a last-minute tan for an event. Some develop in as little as 30 minutes, but the longer you leave them on, the deeper the shine becomes.”

facial tanner Jules says these are “great for maintaining an even glow across the face and are super easy to use.” “Use one as the last step in your evening routine to wake up radiant. Or apply before makeup for an invigorating glow boost that lasts all day.”

HOW TO ACHIEVE A FLAWLESS SHINE

For the face “The best application technique depends on what formula you are using. So pick the one that works best for you,” says Jules. “But as a rule of thumb, use 2-4 drops of self-tanning with your favorite moisturizer, 4-5 squirts of self-tanning water, or half a pump of self-tanning mousse every other day.”

For the body “Preparation is key,” says Jules. “Wet dry areas like hands, feet, elbows and knees before and after use, but do not apply moisturizer to the rest of your body. Whether you use a gloved hand or a brush to apply, apply the tan using lengthwise, sweeping motions to ensure even pressure – do not use circular motions. Finally polish and blend. Use a blending brush to brush over drier areas – ankles, wrists, knees, elbows, feet, ankles – as well as the hairline and cleavage. Remember to remove excess tan from your palms, soles, nails and between your fingers.”
