The Untold Truth of Fast X

Looking at the highest-grossing films in Universal Pictures history, it’s easy to see that the Fast & Furious franchise is one of their most lucrative holdings. Keeping it running as long and smoothly as possible is a top priority for anyone responsible for this iconic outfit. It should come as no surprise, then, that Universal Pictures CEO Donna Langley opened up about the bright future of the Fast & Furious franchise in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in November 2014. Here, Langley said there would be at least a trio of sequels after the then-upcoming Furious 7. This is technically the first-ever mention of Fast X, nearly a decade before it ever hit theaters.

It didn’t take long for more news about the 10th Fast & Furious adventure to surface. In February 2016, the first tentative release date for Fast X was announced, with the project aiming for an April 2, 2021 opening at the time. That would have placed the 10th Fast & Furious film firmly in April’s spot where so many previous Fast & Furious films had excelled financially. The announcement of that release date also came with a hint that the then-untitled Fast & Furious 10 would be the final installment in the franchise.
