Thousands of BT and Sky broadband users are getting a dramatic speed boost, check your postcode now

If you’ve been frustrated with how slow your broadband can be, it might be worth checking out if you’re now entitled to an important boost that could drastically improve your connection. Openreach, part of BT, has announced ten new locations where it will roll out its ultra-fast full fiber network to bring more UK homes up to speed. The Openreach infrastructure is used by some of the UK’s largest internet service providers (ISPs), including BT, Sky and TalkTalk, and this latest upgrade should mean more customers can now take advantage of faster downloads.

With the addition of ten new locations, Openreach found that an additional 124,000 homes and businesses can access the superior gigabit-capable technology.

Locations are spread across the UK in areas such as Cheriton in Kent, Mexborough in South Yorkshire, Grangemouth in Scotland and Morriston in Wales.‌

Unlike older copper lines, which can only handle speeds of around 70 Mbps, Fiber to the Premises (FTTP) is capable of blasting the internet around the home at over 800 Mbps.

At these speeds, it would take just under a minute to download a Full HD movie – that’s more than 10 times faster than the current UK average.

Noting that a total of more than 2,800 towns, counties, villages and hamlets have been included in its building programme, Openreach added that its plan is vital for the UK government to meet its goal of having “gigabit-enabled broadband” by 85 percent to provide Great Britain by 2025.

In March they reached a major milestone of more than 10 million buildings across the UK, including more than 3 million in the country’s most difficult to service ‘last third’.
