Tina Turner and Oprah Winfrey were close friends
The legendary musician died on Wednesday (05/24/23) at the age of 83 after a “long illness” and once told her friend how she would feel when the time came.
In an emotional tribute on Instagram, the 69-year-old star wrote: “After breaking free from years of domestic abuse, her life became a clarion call for triumph.
“I’m grateful for her courage, for showing us what victory looks like when you’re wearing Manolos and a leather miniskirt.
“She once told me that when it came time to leave this earth she would not be scared, but excited and curious.
“Because she learned to LIVE surrounded by her beloved husband Erwin and friends.”
In her social media post, Oprah revealed how she went from being a “fan” of the “Proud Mary” singer to “real friends.”
She said, “Initially I was a Tina Turner fan, then a full-fledged groupie following her from show to show across the country, and eventually we became real friends.”
“She is our eternal goddess of rock ‘n’ roll who had tremendous inner strength that grew throughout her life.
“She was a role model not only for me but for the world. She encouraged a part of me I didn’t know existed.”
To conclude her touching message, the star referenced “The Best” – one of Tina’s most famous songs – and stressed that just meeting her late friend made her a “better person”.
She added: “I’m a better woman, a better person because her life touched my life. In fact, she was simply the best.”
Tina’s rep announced her death in a statement on Wednesday, announcing that she died “peacefully” at home.
They said: “Tina Turner, the ‘Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll’ passed away peacefully at her home in Küsnacht near Zurich, Switzerland, today at the age of 83 after a long illness.
“With her, the world loses a music legend and role model.”
