Trampoline gymnastics uses Brazilian as a test for Paris-2024

Last of the three gymnastics modalities to be included in the program of the Olympic Games, the trampoline has always been the ugly duckling in Brazilian lands. The country only participated in the Olympics when there was a vacancy to compete at home and, in the Pan American Games, it has a history of only two medals. But that scenario is about to change.

Those who follow the Brazilian Trampoline Gymnastics Championship, this Sunday (11), with live transmission from UOL, will see four of the best Brazilian athletes of all time, at least three of them in remarkable evolution. “Both me and Camilla, we want to do series with more than 54 points”, says Alice Gomes, citing her main opponent, and colleague of synchronized competitions for the selection, Camilla Lopes.

This is a very high level even for international competitions. At the Tokyo Olympics, only the top seven put on such good performances. And even so, such a level is no longer a dream, but a reality for the Brazilian trampoline. At the Pan American Championships in Monterrey (Mexico), less than a month ago, Camilla won gold with 55.120. “I’ve been sticking with the same series I started doing last year, to be more consistent,” she explains.

The two have shown similar level. At the Worlds last year, Alice was 12th and Camilla 13th, eliminated in the semifinal. As the goal for this year’s tournament, in November, in England, is to get at least one of them to be among the top eight to win the Olympic vacancy, Alice is training new elements. If all goes well, he will present in Brazil the fullin triffisextremely rare in the sport.

If in rhythmic and artistic gymnastics a note is made up of the sum of difficulty with execution, in trampoline two other elements are added: the time the gymnast stays in the air and how close he stays to the painted square in the center of the trampoline. It’s like archery. The closer to that center, the closer to 10.

In addition to the individual competition, the trampoline also has a synchronized dispute, which follows the same logic as diving. The difference is that, in gymnastics, she is not Olympic, but this year she was included in the program of the Pan American Games. Camilla and Alice won the Baku World Cup stage at the beginning of the year, and dream of the world title this season, in addition to gold at the Pan — in the continental championship last month, they were second, behind the USA.

In the men’s category, the big name in the country at the moment is Rayan Dutra, who was a bronze medalist at the Pan American Championship, with a performance very close to the runner-up, Canadian Jeremy Chartier, fifth at last year’s World Championship. In the Brazilian Nationals, his main rival should be the experienced Rafael Andrade, 37 years old, representing Brazil at Rio-2016 and who currently lives and trains in Germany.
