He played goaltender for Harvard University for four years. Tripp shared goaltender minutes with classmate Aaron Israel throughout his first two seasons; he was the lone starter in 1994, his junior year, as Aaron went on to join the Philadelphia Flyers farm system.

Tripp was selected by the Flyers in the ninth round (218th overall) of the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. Tripp signed a free-agent contract with the Carolina Hurricanes after graduating from Harvard in 1996; he played two seasons in their farm system, in both the ECHL and the AHL.
