Lula calls for end of military support to Ukraine. Brazil is a close trading partner of China.

Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has called on the US to end military support for Ukraine. The United States must “stop promoting war and start talking about peace,” Lula told reporters on Saturday during his visit to Beijing. The European Union must also “start talking about peace”.
In this way, the international community will be able to convince Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy that “peace is in the interest of the whole world,” said the Brazilian leader before continuing his journey from China to the United Arab Emirates.
Lula also seeks closer ties with Washington
Lula arrived in Beijing, Brazil’s main trading partner, on Friday for a state visit. The main aim was to strengthen bilateral relations and to convey the impression that “Brazil is again an important player on the world stage”.
Lula’s statements about Washington’s support for Ukraine are considered sensitive, because Lula also wants closer ties with Washington. His first trip abroad in February – one month after taking office – took him to the USA.
Unlike Western allies, China and Brazil have not condemned Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine or imposed sanctions on Russia. Like Lula, the Chinese government has criticized Washington’s support for Kiev. Both countries are trying to present themselves as neutral parties and to position themselves as mediators in the Ukraine conflict.
No arms shipments
In February, China presented what it called a “peace plan” for Ukraine. However, Western heads of state and government do not consider it credible, also given China’s political proximity to Russia.
Before his trip to China, Lula had suggested the formation of a group of states to mediate in the conflict and announced talks with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. Lula didn’t comment on the results, but said it was “important to be patient.” “Most importantly, we must persuade the countries that are supplying arms and supporting the war to stop doing so.”
