USP (University of São Paulo) promotes this Monday (22), from 3 pm to 5 pm, a psychoeducational meeting for family members and informal caregivers of elderly people with dementia. It is possible to participate online or in person at the IPq-HCFMUSP (Institute of Psychiatry of the Hospital das Clínicas of the Faculty of Medicine of USP), in the Cerqueira César neighborhood, in the central region of São Paulo.
The theme addressed will be “Understanding changes in behavior”, and the session will be intermediated by psychogeriatrician Eduardo César Queiroz Gonçalves.
The event is part of a series of psychoeducational meetings held annually, for more than a decade, by Proter (Program for Seniors) at IPq-HCFMUSP.
Juliana Yokomizo, psychologist and coordinator of the group, says that the meetings are a free service to the community that guides family members and informal caregivers of the elderly about what causes the different types of dementia, what the symptoms are, how the disease usually evolves. and treatment possibilities.
“We explain that the patient will present cognitive alterations, memory loss, impaired language and concentration. In addition, we teach how to deal with the symptoms that we call behavioral or neuropsychiatric, which are restlessness, irritability, apathy, lack of initiative, depression, anxiety, aggressiveness, among others”, he says.
Taking care of a loved one with this condition usually generates a huge emotional burden, emphasizes Yokomizo, which can harm the family member’s mental and physical health.
Therefore, information is passed on so that the caregiver can live in the best way in this situation and not get sick as well.
Another point addressed in the meetings are the rights of patients with dementia. The professionals accompanying the sessions explain what services are available in the public health network and also in the legal area that can support these people in different situations.
In addition to the conversation that will take place this Monday, the next meetings this year will be on June 19th, “Dealing with Behavior Change”; on Aug. 21, “Health Services for Patients with Dementia”; on Sept. 18, “Adapting the Environment for People with Dementia”; on October 23, “How to offer food safely”, and on November 27, with a theme yet to be defined.
