The Minister of Justice, Flávio Dino (PSB), invited the lawyer Marilda Silveira to help him interview and select candidates for vacancies in courts across the country. In addition to appointing occupants of two seats at the STF (Federal Supreme Court) and three at the STJ (Superior Court of Justice), Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) will have the power this year to choose dozens of judges for Federal Regional Courts (TRFs). ) and Regional Electoral Courts (TREs).
Dino is one of Lula’s main advisors in choosing the occupants of these vacancies. The head of Justice has told interlocutors that he does not want to take the lead in the first phase of selection of candidates, so as not to be accused of politically influencing the choice. For this reason, he invited Marilda Silveira to carry out a kind of pre-selection, taking into account the CVs of those interested.
In 2018, when she was a lawyer for the New Party, Marilda signed a lawsuit filed at the STF that asked Lula to be prohibited from giving interviews to reporters Mônica Bergamo, from Folha de S.Paulo, and Florestan Fernandes, from El País. Minister Luiz Fux complied with the request.
Although she already works with Dino, Marilda has not yet been officially designated for the position of special advisor, as she is awaiting the approval of the Civil House. The assessment at the Ministry of Justice is that Novo’s action should not be an obstacle to the nomination. The argument is that the lawyer was hired to defend the party’s position, not her personal opinion. Marilda’s résumé and Dino’s confidence must supersede the episode.
Master and PhD in public law from UFMG (Federal University of Minas Gerais), Marilda teaches administrative and electoral law at IDP, where she is also the academic coordinator of the postgraduate course in electoral law.
She is also a member of Ibrade (Brazilian Institute of Electoral Law) and Abradep (Brazilian Academy of Electoral and Political Law), in addition to being coordinator of the Regional Electoral Transparency in Brazil.
In practice, Marilda already advises Dino at the Ministry of Justice. She acted directly in Lula’s first choices for courts, published this week in the Official Gazette of the Union-among them, the lawyer Danyelle Galvão, who took over a vacancy of substitute judge in the TRE of São Paulo.
