In the midst of a contentious custody battle with his ex, a 24-year-old Florida man was discovered shot to death at his apartment last week in front of his 4-year-old daughter, according to authorities. According to court documents analysed by Law&Crime, the child’s mother, 25-year-old Rachel Moore, and Moore’s stepfather, 53-year-old Jason L. Curtis, were both detained this week and charged in relation to the cold-blooded assassination of 24-year-old Colby Vinson.

On March 19, some 170 miles west of Tallahassee, deputies were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 7700 block of Navarre Parkway after a shooting was reportedly reported there. First responders saw Vinson laying on his back on the concrete right outside his front door when they arrived at the scene. He was declared dead at the spot and looked to have been shot in the face.
The first person Moore’s godmother was in touch with by the investigators was her. She explained that Moore was the mother of Vinson’s child and that Vinson and Moore had recently been awarded divided custody of the child following a contentious custody dispute. In fact, according to Moore’s godmother, Vinson had not been able to see or have his daughter stay at his house for at least a year on the day of his death, deputies wrote in a probable cause affidavit.
After losing the custody battle with Vinson, Moore allegedly informed the Major Crimes Unit detectives that she had an unsettling encounter with Curtis, whom she referred to as “Booger,” afterward. According to the affidavit, Moore allegedly claimed that after telling Curtis about the outcome of the court proceeding, “he sent her photographs of knives/guns through Facebook Messenger.”
According to the affidavit, Rachel Moore thanked Curtis for helping her feel better and afterwards deleted her Facebook Messenger app because she thought it looked horrible to have this chat with him. “Yesterday night (3/19/2023), about 10 p.m., [Curtis] contacted [Moore] and told her not to worry; everything was good, he had to leave, and he had to put his “ass” in the wind.”
Moore claimed that Curtis seemed “happy” when she spoke to him and that she “would pay him $50 in petrol.” Despite acknowledging that things “look bad for her,” she allegedly told police that she didn’t believe Curtis would actually hurt Vinson. Curtis was apprehended after investigators tracked his car and discovered him in Alabama.
Sheriff Johnson reported that when officers searched the car, they found a piece of paper containing Vinson’s physical description and information for his home and workplace, in addition to what they think to be the murder weapon. Officials highlighted that additional charges and arrests are still possible as a result of the active investigation into Vinson’s death.
