Who is Josh Harris?

Joshua Jordan Harris is the original name of Josh Harris and he was born on December 1964, in Chevy Chase, Maryland, U.S. An American philanthropist and private equity investor, Josh Harris was raised in the Washington metropolitan area. He completed his economics degree at the Wharton School and later earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1990.

Along with Leon Black and Marc Rowan, Josh co-founded the private equity firm Apollo Global Management and led most of its day-to-day operations from inception until 2022. Following his departure from the firm, Harris has been focused on other ventures, primarily in the sports business. His net worth is currently estimated to be between US$6 and $7.6 billion as of April 2023.

During the early 2010s, Josh Harris spearheaded investment groups that acquired the Philadelphia 76ers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). In 2017, he teamed up with David Blitzer to establish Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment (HBSE), which oversees the 76ers and Devils franchises, among other brands and properties.

Additionally, Harris serves as a general partner of the Premier League’s Crystal Palace F.C. In 2023, he made history by inking a deal to purchase the NFL’s Washington Commanders for $6.05 billion, marking the largest sales transaction ever recorded for a sports franchise.

In 2014, Josh Harris founded the Harris Family Charitable Foundation, now called Harris Philanthropies. He pledged to donate $3.5 million over five years to the Philadelphia Police Athletic League in 2015. In February 2019, he gifted $10 million to the University of Pennsylvania and founded the Harris Family Alternative Investments Program.

Harris had previously established the Harris Family Endowed Scholarship at the university. The foundation also donated $1 million to the Penn Quakers wrestling program in July 2018. In August 2020, Harris gave $2 million to The Bridgespan Group to create a leadership program for nonprofit organizations serving the Philadelphia area.

What is Josh Harris Net Worth?

With a net worth of at least $6 billion, Josh Harris is a billionaire who achieved his wealth in the business sector by co-founding Apollo Global Management in 1990. This enterprise remains his primary source of income, as estimated by Forbes.

Josh Harris still holds a 6% stake in Apollo Global Management, a company with assets under management exceeding $515 billion as of June 2022. This highlights the vast amount of money at their disposal for potential profit.

Josh Harris is accompanied by fellow billionaire Mitchell Rales and basketball icon Magic Johnson, who has a track record of co-owning successful sports franchises. Johnson led the Los Angeles Dodgers to their first World Series victory in several decades and helped the LAFC win the MLS Cup in just a few years since joining the league.

Through his enterprise Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment, Josh Harris possesses ownership of the Philadelphia 76ers in the NBA and the New Jersey Devils in the NHL.

What Does Josh Harris Own?

In the event that Josh Harris’ tentative deal to acquire the Washington Commanders materializes, he would allegedly possess 30% ownership of the franchise, the minimum required by the NFL to qualify as the managing partner of a team.

Forbes has stated that Harris’ consortium comprises 17 limited partners in total. Maryland-based billionaire Mitchell Rales would control a 12% stake, while NBA legend Magic Johnson would hold 4% ownership if the deal is ultimately concluded.

According to Forbes, there are new details of the agreement between Josh Harris and Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington Commanders. Under the deal, Harris’ group is set to pay Snyder a total of $6.05 billion for the team, with $5.8 billion paid upfront and an additional $250 million paid over a two-year period.

After agreeing on a deal in principle for $6.05 billion last week, Dan Snyder and Josh Harris have yet to finalize the contract. The NFL has reportedly received the term sheet for review to ensure compliance with league regulations. These regulations mandate that a team’s managing partner own at least 30% of a franchise’s equity. If Harris’ group takes on the NFL’s maximum debt limit ($1.1 billion) to buy the Commanders, Harris would need to contribute $1.5 billion to maintain a 30% stake, according to Forbes.
