A US Capitol rioter who used a stolen riot shield to crush a police officer in a doorway on January 6, 2021, was given a sentence of more than seven years in prison on Friday, April 14. Patrick Edward McCaughey III’s proposed jail term by federal prosecutors was 15 years and 8 months, which would have been the heaviest sentence for a Capitol riot case in more than 5 years.
However, US District Judge Trevor McFadden gave him a sentence of seven years and six months in prison, followed by two years of supervised release. The 25-year-old McCaughey was referred to by the judge as the “poster child for everything dangerous and gruesome” for the riot on January 6, 2021. “His conduct. The judge reportedly told McCaughey, “His actions are some of the most heinous crimes committed on that dark day.”

Patrick Edward McCaughey is 25 years old.
McCaughey, a resident of Ridgefield, Connecticut, expressed regret for joining the crowd of Trump supporters that “raided” the Capitol. He apologised, “I’m sorry I acted more like an animal that day and less like a citizen.” His 90-month sentence is on par with the second-longest prison term handed out to a defendant in the Capitol disturbance thus far.
This judge gave Albuquerque Cosper Head, a Tennessee man who dragged Metropolitan Police Department officer Michael Fanone into a mob of rioters, a sentence that was comparable to that term. A guy from Finksburg, Maryland, also admitted guilt on Friday to attacking a reporter for the Associated Press and two police officers on January 6 outside the Capitol. On July 20, Rodney Milstreed is scheduled to get his punishment.
The anticipated sentencing guidelines for the 56-year-old Milstreed’s case suggest a prison term ranging from five years and three months to six years and six months, Chief Judge James Boasberg informed him. After hearing testimony from the bench trial in September, the judge in McCaughey’s case found him guilty on nine counts, including criminal assault.
On January 6, McCaughey and 8 other individuals were accused of participating in one of the bloodiest altercations on Capitol Hill. When MPD officer Daniel Hodges and McCaughey came face to face during a struggle for control of a tunnel entry on Lower West Terrace, McCaughey used a stolen riot shield to pin Hodges to a metal door frame. During McCaughey’s trial and sentencing hearing, Hodges gave testimony.
He told the judge that McCaughey was a “foot soldier” who was “in the forefront of the assault” and added, “I don’t anticipate that changing anytime soon.” When another rioter snatched the officer’s baton and struck him across the face with it, Hodges reportedly called for help.
After more than two minutes of the assault, McCaughey finally gave up and covered his eyes with Officer Hodges’ face shield, according to a court document written by Assistant U.S. Attorney Kimberly Paschall. Hodges was driven to a hospital after regaining access to the Capitol building. Prior to being doused with a chemical irritant and forced to retreat by another officer, McCaughey used the shield to strike a second officer.
The actions of these cops in stopping the mob at the Lower West Terrace gate may have saved the lives of others, including Congressmen, Paschall stated. Earlier this year, the judge gave prison terms ranging from 14 months to five years to four of McCaughey’s co-defendants. McCaughey’s behaviour, according to Paschall, was more “egregious and prolonged” than the other people’s, he claimed.
McCaughey’s attorneys asked for a one-year prison term. They stated that McCaughey’s “misunderstanding” of the 2020 presidential election was what drove his “reprehensible” behaviour. Trump is one of the most well-known. Mr. McCaughey is not one of these people; he is aware of his error, according to his attorneys.
In order to attend Trump’s ‘Stop the Steal’ event on January 6, McCaughey, a carpenter working for his father’s construction company, travelled about 300 miles from his home in Connecticut to Washington, DC. After hearing the remarks, he left towards the Capitol and went up against the police men manning the West Plaza.
