The man accused of beating and killing a San Luis Obispo couple while they were walking their dog pleaded not guilty to the crime Wednesday. San Luis Obispo resident Daniel Angel Saligan Patricio, 24, allegedly struck Matthew Chachere, 39, and Jennifer Besser, 36, with his car on November 21.
The couple’s bodies were not found until the next day, several hours after police received a report of a dead dog in the creek bed. The San Luis Obispo Police Department arrested Saligan Patricio on February 27 after a three-month investigation, and the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office subsequently charged him with two felony vehicular manslaughter.

Relatives of Chachere and Besser spoke in San Luis Obispo Superior Court Wednesday morning and asked Superior Court Judge Craig van Rooyen to reconsider his decision to release Saligan Patricio without bail during his first court appearance. court on March 1. The couple planned to visit family in Modesto for Thanksgiving, but never made it there. Instead, their bodies lay in the creek bed under dense brush for nearly two days, she said. “(Saligan Patricio) didn’t miss the vacation with his family,” said Linda Chachere.
Patricia Blevins, another relative of Chachere and Besser, said Saligan Patricio needs to suffer some kind of suffering, like jail or a financial burden, in order to count on the lives he has taken. “Our lives stopped on November 23 when we received the news that our children were found and were no longer alive,” she said. “We are in a jail that we did not create.”
