Michael Carey Wiki – Michael Carey Biography
Derbyshire Police confirmed that a body was pulled from the River Derwent at Darley Abbey Mills on Saturday morning. Carey, 87, was taken to the hospital but sadly died shortly after. A man who died after being rescued from a river has been named after former BBC Radio Derby presenter Michael Carey.
The former radio host hosted Memorable Melodies for nearly 20 years before stepping down in 2019. It’s still unclear how he got into the water, and police said he was investigating. Anyone who was in the area between 08:30 and 09:20 BST on Saturday has been asked to contact the force.
BBC Radio Derby executive editor Aftab Gulzar told the BBC that Carey, also known as Mike, had an “incredible life”. The former presenter also worked as a national cricket correspondent and was an author. Gulzar described Carey as a “steady pro” at work.

“He was a reserved man, but if you got into some stuff like music, cricket or dogging him, then you’d be there chewing the fat for a while,” he said.
Sportswriter Charles Collins said he met Carey when he joined BBC Radio Derby in 2002, becoming “great partners” in the process.
Mr Collins paid tribute to Mr Carey’s narration, due to the fact that he “knew everyone in Debyshire”. “When he was covering Derbyshire cricket, he could verify any story just by calling Mike,” he said.
